Funny Tax Deductions

Each year, the IRS receives thousands upon thousands of funny tax deduction attempts by taxpayers. There’s a broad range of absurdity in many of these, but as you can see in the list below, they are in fact real.

  • A pet’s health expenses
  • A dog (or cat) as a dependent
  • The wife’s new mink coat
  • Mileage to and from the racetrack
  • The cost of hiring a dog sitter
  • The cost of your daughter’s wedding
  • Sperm donation as a loss
  • A nuclear fallout shelter

Those were the ones that were denied – and rightly so! A nuclear fallout shelter? Really buddy?! Did you really think the IRS would want to help fuel your conspiracy theorist paranoia? And no Ms. Betsy, you can’t claim little Fritzie-the-cat as a dependent.

Anyway, the IRS does indeed make exceptions to odd deductions in rare cases if you can provide proof (from doctors in most cases) that what you purchased was actually needed for something to do with your health or well-being. Such exceptions can be found in the list below.

  • Sex Change Operation
  • Body Oil
  • Clarinet Lessons
  • Depreciate your ostrich
  • Cost of a swimming pool
  • Breast implants
  • Cost of reversing a vasectomy
  • An African Safari
