Each year, the IRS receives thousands upon thousands of funny tax deduction attempts by taxpayers. There’s a broad range of absurdity in many of these, but as you can see in the list below, they are in fact real.
Those were the ones that were denied – and rightly so! A nuclear fallout shelter? Really buddy?! Did you really think the IRS would want to help fuel your conspiracy theorist paranoia? And no Ms. Betsy, you can’t claim little Fritzie-the-cat as a dependent.
Anyway, the IRS does indeed make exceptions to odd deductions in rare cases if you can provide proof (from doctors in most cases) that what you purchased was actually needed for something to do with your health or well-being. Such exceptions can be found in the list below.
