Tip of the day: Ask Follow Up Questions

Recently, I was chatting with a friend who is in charge of hiring. I asked her, “What’s one sign that the person you’re interviewing isn’t a good fit for the position?” I found her answer surprising, but it made total sense: not asking follow-up questions.

According to my friend, when the interviewer asks “Any questions?” a good candidate will always have something to ask. If they don’t have anything to ask, it looks like they’re not engaged or really interested in the position you’re interviewing for.

But what if you just don’t have any burning questions? Here is a helpful list of things that are good to know, but might not be spring to your mind right away:

  • What’s the workplace culture like?
  • How would you describe the team dynamic at XYZ company?
  • Can you tell me about the biggest challenges of working at XYZ company?
  • What projects are XYZ company working on that you’re particularly excited about?

I’ve found that interviewers actually enjoy talking about themselves and how they view their workplace. Asking interesting questions that force the interviewer to open up and think through their own workplace processes are a great way to keep them feeling engaged.
